Events Manager, dbt User Groups

This job has closed but is shown for context on data science work at dbt Labs.
Fishtown Analytics was founded in 2016 to empower analysts to create and disseminate organizational knowledge. Since then, we’ve grown to become one of the most respected brands in the analytics industry. Our product, dbt, is used by thousands of companies.

We’re looking for an Events Manager to join our marketing team and community teams in growing a global network of local dbt Meetups.

We hosted the first dbt Meetup in New York City in 2018. Since then, dbt Meetups have started in San Francisco, Sydney, Boston, and London. In spite of a lack of in-person events, the dbt Community continues to be interested in meeting folks from their local data community. And in anticipation of being able to meet with small groups of people in 2021, we’re hiring someone to focus full-time on building a global network of dbt user groups.

Who we are
At Fishtown Analytics, we have developed strong opinions on how companies should practice analytics.

Specifically, we believe that:
-->Code, not graphical user interfaces, is the best abstraction to express complex analytic logic
--> Data analysts should adopt similar practices and tools to software developers
--> Critical analytics infrastructure should be controlled by its users as open-source software
--> Analytic code itself — not just analytics tools — will increasingly be open source

It turns out that a lot of other people believe this too! Over the course of the past several years we've built a community of 9,000+ people and 3,000 companies who are using our ideas, products, and workflows to conduct analytics, including Lyft, Monzo, GitLab, Snowflake, the ACLU, Amazon, JetBlue, and RentTheRunway. Our product, dbt (, has come to be synonymous with the practice of analytics engineering, defining an entire industry. We’re backed by top investors including Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia Capital, recently raising our series B - read the announcement here.

In this role, you can expect to:

    • Replicate the “spark” that have made dbt Meetups special spaces in the past.
    • Support dbt Community Leaders in building diverse, useful, and growing Meetup groups in their local city.
    • Create, test, and refine a playbook that can be used to scale dbt Meetups globally in the coming years.
    • Act as a bridge between the Fishtown Analytics team and local dbt Communities, making sure that emerging communities see the Fishtown presence and feel as valued as our first Meetup group in NYC.
    • Do some traveling. While you won’t need to be at every Meetup there will be good reasons for you to be on the ground in local communities. You should expect 3-6 / weeks of travel in a year once things open back up.
    • Create a virtuous cycle where local community leaders are onboarded, trained, and then begin contributing their learnings back into the global group of organizers.
    • Provide resources– training, budget, promotion, ideas, etc.– for our Community Leaders so they can create meaningful value for local attendees.
    • Be a firm defender and upholder of the dbt. Code of Conduct and Vendor Guidelines

You are a good fit if you:

    • You have previous success building inclusive, local communities and teaching others how to do the same (perhaps you've run a co-working space or previously ran a Meetup)
    • You are a values-oriented leader with a strong bias towards inclusivity and enablement.
    • You have an understanding of the modern data ecosystem, open source, or adjacent.
    • You have developed opinions on what makes a Meetup good and worth attending, and are comfortable coaching others on how to create this experience.

You'll have an edge if:

    • You have prior experience with dbt, analytics, or data warehouses
    • You have previous experience working with open source software and open source communities

Compensation & Benefits

    • Salary: $85-120k
    • Equity: .02-.05%

    • Co-worker Interviews:
    • Fatima Conteh, Events Manager - project review
    • Lauren Craigie, Head of Product Marketing

    • Panel Interview:
    • Drew Banin, CPO
    • Janessa Lantz, Director of Marketing
