The job
Growth marketing managers own a number, usually signups, activated users or revenue, and do whatever moves it. That might mean testing a new paid channel, rewriting the onboarding emails, building a referral program or fixing a pricing page. The defining trait is an experimentation habit: form a hypothesis, test it cheaply, measure honestly, and double down or kill it.
The role is broadest at early-stage companies, where one growth marketer might run paid, lifecycle and conversion work at once. At larger companies growth teams are often split by funnel stage (acquisition, activation, retention, monetisation) and work closely with product managers and engineers.
Strong growth marketers are comfortable with data. They can pull their own numbers, spot where a funnel leaks and explain why a result might be noise. They also know when to stop testing and start building.
A typical week
- Review the funnel dashboard and pick the biggest leak to work on
- Launch two experiments and write up the results of last week's
- Meet with product and engineering about an onboarding test
- Check channel performance and move budget toward what's working
- Share learnings with the wider team so wins get reused
How they're measured
- Signups, activation rate and revenue growth
- Customer acquisition cost and payback period
- Experiment velocity and win rate
- Conversion rate at each funnel step
- Retention of the cohorts you acquired
Skills that matter
- Experiment design
- A clear hypothesis and a fair test separate growth from guessing.
- Funnel analytics
- You need to find leaks yourself, often in SQL or Amplitude.
- Channel breadth
- Paid, lifecycle, SEO and referrals are all levers.
- Prioritisation
- There are always more ideas than time.
- Copy and conversion
- Many wins come from better pages and messages.
- Automation and AI
- Small growth teams lean on AI and tools like Clay and Zapier to do more.
