The job
Product marketing managers (PMMs) sit between product, marketing and sales. They own positioning and messaging (who the product is for, what problem it solves and why it beats the alternatives), run launches, and equip sales with pitch decks, battle cards and demo stories. In many companies they also own pricing input, competitive intelligence and customer research.
The core of the job is understanding customers better than anyone else in the company. Good PMMs run customer interviews, sit in on sales calls, read win-loss notes and turn what they learn into messaging that the website, ads and sales team all use.
PMM roles vary a lot. At a product-led company you might own the in-product and self-serve experience. At an enterprise company you might spend half your time with sales. The job post usually tells you which, and it's worth asking.
